Journey with us on the world-famous Settle-Carlisle line, England’s most scenic railway. Enjoy the incredible view and the action from up to five on-board cameras as we travel from Settle Junction to the Citadel Station in Carlisle through some of Britain’s wildest and most beautiful countryside. Our trip takes in all of the iconic sights, from the quarter-mile long Ribblehead Viaduct and Garsdale Station, the highest mainline station in England, to Ais Gill Summit and disused stations frozen in time at Little Salkeld and Cumwhinton.
You can choose to listen to the informative commentary describing the sights we pass by, explaining the history of this last mainline to be built by hand and how it came close to closure in the 1980s, or turn off the narration to concentrate on the sounds of the train and the spectacular pictures from the on-board cameras. Our international award-winning team have brought decades of broadcast experience to this production to ensure you get the most from it.
More than six thousand workers toiled to carve this railway through mountains and across bogs and valleys, and many lost their lives. The line was built as the result of a battle between powerful 19th century companies, with the Midland Railway anxious to compete for the lucrative market between London and Scotland. This route was the most challenging by far, and the legacy the Victorians have left us provides a unique ability to access the delights of the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria’s stunning Eden Valley. So sit back in your armchair and prepare to be enthralled by the most beautiful and fascinating of England’s railways – the Settle-Carlisle line.
And as a further added treat we re-interpret the classic 1952 BBC film, London to Brighton in Four Minutes, with our own high-speed run from Settle Junction to Carlisle.
