Travel on the steam, narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

SKU: N/A Category:

The Ffestiniog Railway is a steam operated narrow gauge railway which runs for 13½ miles from the beautiful harbour town of Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the Welsh mountains. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wales, and rightly so. You’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery as the line climbs 700 feet from sea level, often clinging to the hillside above precipitous drops, exposing the striking landscape of the Snowdonia National Park and the industrial past of this area of North Wales.

The railway was built in the 1830s to transport slate to the harbour at Porthmadog for export. Its success was largely due to the Double Fairlie steam engine, an innovative design which was perfect for the steep climbs and tight curves of the track. Our journey is on Merddin Emrys, one of the few surviving examples. Four cameras give a superb view of the line and of the working on the locomotive’s footplate, and there’s a special bonus at Tan y Bwlch where we see the watering operation in progress.

A full, informative commentary gives an insight into the line’s history, the long, hard struggle of the dedicated and talented team who brought it back to life, and the significant features along the way. There’s the 60 foot high dry-stone wall, the Cae Mawr; the mile long Cob crossing the sands of Traeth Mawr; and the Deviation, built to take the line around a new reservoir which flooded part of the track.

The Ffestiniog Railway is surely one of the most important steam heritage lines in Britain, and this production puts you in prime position to enjoy a journey along its full length.

As a further added treat we re-interpret the classic 1952 BBC film, London to Brighton in Four Minutes, with our own high-speed run from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Enjoy a truly unforgettable journey brought to you by our international award winning production team.
