The Llangollen Railway

The Llangollen Railway is a heritage steam line running along the banks of the River Dee in Denbighshire, North Wales from Llangollen to Corwen. The 10 mile stretch passes over the river just once at Pentrefellin sidings as it winds its way up the valley. Built by The Llangollen Railway and operated by The Great Western Railway, and its architecture stands out in the magnificent station buildings.

One station worthy of note is our first stop at Berwyn, which clings to the steep hillside between Thomas Telford's A5 road and the river far below. It's a place with a curious history, because the station was built here primarily to meet the demands of the Chairman of The Llangollen Railway, Lt Col Charles Tottenham. He lived close by, and wanted to ensure he and visiting guests could make use of the facilities of the new line.

Our journey leaves from Platform 1 at Llangollen Station, passing Berwyn, Deeside Halt, Glyndyfrdwy and Carrog before arriving at Corwen. We're riding aboard 5199, a Class 5101 Great Prairie Steam locomotive built in 1934 for The Great Western Railway. We've five cameras mounted to give you the best view of the journey and the on-board action. On arrival at our destination, we'll see the train reverse to Carrog before 5199 runs around the carriages on the Carrog loop to position for the return journey to Llangollen.

There are spectacular views of the scenery we pass by - this really is a beautiful corner of Wales - and we can watch the driver and fireman in action

Along with the captivating pictures there's full commentary, guiding us through the journey and the history of the railway. Or if you prefer to listen to the sounds of the engine without interruption, you can turn the commentary off.

There are two added extras to enjoy. A short feature about theLlangollen Railway explains more about its history, and we've recreated our own version of the 1952 BBC film, London to Brighton in Four Minutes, with a high speed run from Llangollen to Corwen.

A Journey on The Llangollen Railway gives you the best seat on the train, and is available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
